Head of the Yarra
published: 01-Dec-2011The rain did its level best to cancel the regatta. In the end, after considerable delay the organisers made the decision to race with half the original entry (and have taken considerable flack for doing so). See here for the HRC Secretary's response where they offer their sincere apologies. Only one MUBC master's crew raced in the end, and only three viiis from the younger members. MUBC came 2nd in men's and women's open and won Men's B. The Men's B crew had a great row to move away from a talented Mercantile boat in the second half of the race.
The men's open VIII race was quite something as SUBC, starting controversially in second, chased MUBC early forcing our crew way over race pace for the first half of the course and collided with the crew at Morrell. MUBC then pulled away, but had spent so much energy holding SUBC off that Mercantile were able to attack strongly in the second half from the Big Bend, and take the headship. Congratulations to Mercantile who had a superb race.
The photograph below shows Sam Hookway, stroke of MUBC, having lost his blade at Morrell as SUBC admire their work...
