2011, Aug - STX Korean University's Cup
published: 08-Aug-2011This was without doubt the most incredible rowing event I have been to.
There are only 700 rowers active in Korea yet the country hosted the Olympics in 1988 and will host the Asian Olympic qualifying regatta and the World Rowing Championships in 2013, all at the Seoul Olympic course. The STX Cup, designed to galvanise rowing in Korea, involved crews from Japan, Korea including a crew of national celebrities whoi drew in the crowds, the UK (Oxford University) and Australia (MUBC). The MUBC crew was drawn from college rowers after the College regatta. 34,000 spectators lined the course and 20 million are reputed to have watched the race live on TV afterwards. The party went long into the night as 4 KPop bands kicked off proceedings at the course. The crew also took advantage of the sponsor's hospitality and enjoyed a tour of Seoul including the King's Palace on the day following the regatta.
MUBC extends grateful thanks to Mr Ken Lee of Rowing Korea and FISA for hosting us on the rowing trip of a lifetime.
