Paul McGann – Senior Coach and Coaching Mentor
Paul provides leadership and guidance to the coaching group and has been with MUBC since the 2022/23 season. Paul is an acclaimed rowing professional, a Rowing Australia Level 3 qualified coach, has International and Australian representative coaching experience at Senior A and Under 23 level having coached gold and silver medal winning crews at World Rowing Championships.
Alexandra Hagan – Women’s Development Coach
Alex brings excellent technical expertise to our club supporting all rowing cohorts including youth, senior and masters rowers. She is a World Championship bronze medallist and an Olympian having competed in the Australian women's eight in London 2012 and again in Rio 2016.
James Rook - Men's Development Coach
James is an Australian Olympic Coxswain, coxing the Australian Women’s Eight at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics. A part of MUBC since the 2022/23 season, James has brought technical knowledge and high energy to the men's squad. This coupled with his experience as a world class coxswain has provided invaluable insights to the athletes at MUBC.
Liam O’Leary – Men’s Development Coach
As our youth men’s squad Co-coach, Liam’s assists with overseeing the squad ensuring it runs effectively and efficiently, providing the on and off-water support and direction required to enable our athletes to develop throughout the season and provide them with the best environment to achieve their potential at the Victorian State and Australian National Championships.

Matt Ryan – former High Performance Head Coach 2020-2026
Matt led the overall rowing program at MUBC since 2020. His focus was on guiding and developing our high-performance athletes and assisting them to reach their goals of representing Victoria and Australia and competing on the world stage.
A 2008 Olympic Silver Medallist, Matt's unmatched enthusiasm for our sport powered our performance programs across all ages and skill levels. He brought a wealth of experience and technical knowledge to MUBC and led our talented group of coaches to deliver outstanding performances at every regatta.
Beth Ross – Former Director of Rowing Head of Talent Identification and Development 2023-2026
Joining our coaching team in 2023, Beth worked closely with the High Performance Head Coach to lead the overall MUBC rowing program with a focus on talent identification, recruitment, and athlete development.
Beth is a Tokyo 2021 Olympic Silver Medallist, representing New Zealand in the Women's Eight. She began coaching at MUBC at the beginning of the 2023/24 season and has brought an immense amount of fresh knowledge and technical skill into the program.
Emma Dyke – Former Women's Development Coach 2024-2026
Emma is an Olympian and a World Champion, having rowed on the New Zealand National Team for many years. She joined MUBC for the 2024/25 season to help lead our youth women’s program and was able to combine excellent technical knowledge with an understanding of competing at the highest level to help the squad of young rowers develop into the best rowers they can be.
