University Men's and Women's Eights travel to Nanjing, China!

MUBC Crews Take on Nanjing 

Two Melbourne University Boat Club eights travelled to Nanjing, China from 8–15 September to compete in two international regattas, representing MUBC on the world stage.

Our Men’s and Women’s Eights first competed in the inaugural Sino-Australian Collegiate Rowing and Dragon Boat Challenge, taking on local crews alongside six Australian universities.

The crews competed in two 1,000m rowing events, with our Women’s Eight taking out 1st place overall, while our Men’s Eight finished 6th overall.

The teams also had the opportunity to try their hand at dragon boat racing, with one of our crews securing Bronze. The MUBC team then went one better in the Dragon Boat Tug-of-War competition, taking out 1st place! 🥇

A few days later, both crews lined up at the Nanjing International University Rowing Open, which featured universities from around the world, including Otago, Amsterdam, Oxford and Cambridge.

The crews battled it out over two 1,000m races, with their accumulated times determining the overall rankings. Our Women’s Eight finished 2nd overall, while the Men’s Eight finished 13th after unfortunately experiencing a boat-stopping issue caused by a bent fin during the first race.

The crews then took on a 4 x 500m erg relay, with the Women’s crew again performing strongly to finish 3rd overall, while the Men’s crew finished 6th.

The Men’s Eight also competed in a 3,000m exhibition bumps race, finishing just one second behind Amsterdam to take 2nd place.

It was an incredible experience for both crews, competing against some of the world’s leading university rowing programs while representing Melbourne University Boat Club internationally.
